Dewlap

Dewlap — A loose fold of skin beneath the throat, or the display formed when that fold is extended. In anoles, supporting structures in the throat spread a broad area of color that sends visual signals to other individuals.

Understanding by example

If a green anole bobs its head while extending its dewlap, note nearby anoles, the distance between them and the direction of their bodies. The same structure can be used in both courtship and territorial interactions.

Common misconceptions

A single photograph of an extended dewlap cannot show that an animal is “happy” or about to attack. Dewlap color, size and display frequency vary with species, sex and context. Record a dewlap display separately from changes in color across the whole body.
