Morph — A term used in reptile keeping for variation in color, pattern or form. It can refer to a trait linked to a specific genetic locus, a feature intensified by selective breeding over generations, or a commercial lineage name.
Understanding by example
Leopard gecko albino strains and lines selected for strong orange coloration may both be called morphs, but they should not be assumed to share the same inheritance. Ask whether a name identifies a locus, a selected polygenic trait or a combination of traits.
Common misconceptions
A morph is not a scientific name or subspecies. Similar photographs do not establish the same genotype or pedigree, nor do they confirm health. Evaluate the label, proposed inheritance, parental records and verification method separately.
