Basking

Basking — Warming the body in a place where sunlight or another heat source is available. It is a form of behavioral thermoregulation, and the basking site, its surface temperature and the surrounding air temperature are separate measurements.

Understanding by example

An infrared reading of a rock surface and a probe reading of nearby air measure different things. Even when a target temperature is reached beneath the heat source, the animal needs space for its entire body and access to a cooler area. A high surface target is not a target for all enclosure air.

Common misconceptions

Basking duration alone does not diagnose health. Lamp changes, room temperature, feeding and individual condition can alter behavior. Check where and how a species-specific value was measured, and do not raise heat automatically because an animal remains hidden.
